Swing Time in San Diego: Maderas Golf Club
San Diego has a wealth of good golf, but Maderas stands out as one of the finest upscale courses in the area. Tucked in the bucolic hills of Poway and part of the respected Troon Golf family, this par 72, 7,167-yard course appeared in 1999, garnering a steady devoted following of local and visiting players ever since. Former PGA player Johnny Miller worked with landscape architect Robert Graves Muir to create a challenging course that honors the inland topography, and navigates the canyons and ravines with 100-year-old live oaks dotting the landscape and magical mountain views in sight. Three lakes, waterfalls, elevation changes and rock croppings boost the challenge quotient, while blankets of wildflowers paint the scene in a riot of color.
With accolades from Zagat, Golf Week Magazine, San Diego Magazine , and four-and-a-half stars from Golf Digest, it’s not surprising that Maderas also has a stellar driving range, an exceptional golf academy, award-winning service and a swank clubhouse, fulfilling Troon’s promise of luxury golf. Myriad tournaments and charity events take place on site like benefits for Rady’s Children Hospital or Mothers Against Drunk Driving this month. On August 2, 2010, Maderas will host a benefit for the Lance Armstrong’s LiveStrong foundation as well.
For those in the area this weekend, check out their Mother’s Day special where a round of golf is $109 and includes a $20 voucher toward their Backyard Burger Night or Chop House Night at the clubhouse.
Course fees run $210 on weekends and $170 on weekdays with deals for residents and twilight play. Click here for rates.
