Washington DC in Bloom
Spring is around the corner, meaning the magical display of cherry tree blossoms can’t be far behind. Although Japan may be the first destination normally associated with this incredible spectacle of nature, Washington DC was gifted 3,000 cherry trees by the city of Tokyo back in 1912. So now every year towards the end of March, the nation’s capital is aglow in a dazzling color as bright pink buds transform to lighter hued blossoms along the Potomac and throughout the Tidal Basin.
It’s an unforgettable experience to witness the beauty of the blossoms firsthand. Definitely try to plan a trip to Washington DC during the peak bloom dates which are expected to run from March 31 through April 11 this year. The city throws three weekends of events from March 27 to April 11, complete with a family gala, Japanese street festival, fireworks, and festival parade. The blooming period starts several days before the Peak Bloom Date and can last as long as 14 days.
Key Cherry Blossom Event Dates are:
March 27 — National Cherry Blossom Festival Family Day & Opening Ceremony: This is the best weekend for family travel. March 27 is Family Day with plenty of activities for children at the National Building, plus the festival’s opening ceremony with live entertainment.
April 3 — Fireworks Display on the Southwest Waterfront, with a lantern-lighting ceremony on April 4th.
April 10th — National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade® and the Sakura Matsuri — Japanese Street Festival
